Cherokee
The Cherokee is the second largest tribe. Their name came from a Muskogee word meaning 'speakers of another language'. The Cherokee would call themselves Aniyunwiya, which means "Principal People" and in their own language Cherokee is Tsalagi. The Cherokee people spoke mainly Iroquoian language, which is a language full of words composed of many Morphemes. Location
The Cherokee Indians are original residents of mainly Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Most Cherokees were forced to travel and move along to Oklahoma to the Trail of Tears. Now, the offspring of the first Cherokee Indians live throughout the first Cherokee Indian homelands. Their are many important people in the Cherokee tribe. One of them is Nancy Ward. She was a beloved tribal leader who was born in 1738 and passed away in 1824. Another major person in the Cherokees history is Sequoyah. Sequoyah invented the Cherokee alphabet. He was birthed in 1770 and sadly passed away in 1843. Culture
The Cherokee culture has many points and one is weapons. The weapons they used were daggers, axes, and clubs. On the clubs they would put animal teeth, nails, or spikes. The Cherokee also have a religion and they believe in Loak Ishto Hollo Aba which means Holy Fire Daddy. They believe that he lived above the clouds and then he could also be called Great Holy Father that lives in the Heavens. Another major point in their culture is their art. The Cherokee did many types of art. They did pottery , bead and feather work, and they painted. Housing
The Cherokees lived with many of their kind at a time and they lived on the banks of rivers. Most of the time relatives lived together and the houses were in the shape of either a square or a rectangle. The Cherokees had two different houses for warm and cold weather since they didn't have air conditioners or pellet/fire stoves. They lived in clapboard houses in the warm weather which are wide open areas with wind when its there to come in. An asi (on the left) is like a tipi and is used in the cold weather which has dirt and clay wrapped and hardened around it. The asi also had a fire in the center of it so the people could stay warm. Now The Cherokee Nation have become a leader in education, housing, economic development, vocational training, and business. They are still around with a current estimated population with 370,000 Cherokee people living on the reservation and elsewhere. This makes them the largest group of Native Americans. Also, over a million people visit each year to cultural attractions and its led by Chief Michell Hicks in North Carolina.
